Introducing our new Gallery block for Headway!

It's been a while since we released our last block, but that is definitely not due to lack of activity! We've been hard at work on our sexy new Gallery block and we're thrilled to finally show it off!

I think it’s pretty safe to say that we’re pretty excited about this one!

Like all our other blocks, the Gallery block was built with simplicity in mind, but don’t let that fool you – the Gallery block is our most feature rich block to date – and this is only the first release!

We have some cool things planned, which we’ll be rolling out over the next couple of months, but in the mean time, lets take a look at what you can do with the block right now.

Gallery Post Type

We took the experience gained from building the Features and Testimonials blocks and took it even further with the Gallery block. Each post is an album and can be organized using Categories and Tags.

Each album is a post and we’ve integrated the awesome new Media Manager, making the process of uploading or selecting images quick and easy.

Once you’ve selected your images, you are able to reorder the images using drag-and-drop, as well as edit or delete inidividual images. The whole process of selecting your images is handled via ajax, which means there is no need to reload the page.

The frontend is made up of two primary views – Albums and Album. As the names suggest, the one view lets you show a list of the albums you’ve created (with the option to filter out those you don’t want included). The Album view is used to display your albums content (ie, the images).

Both views have filters to include or exclude by Category, Tag or Album. By default, no filters are applied, so all your albums will be displayed until some filters are applied.

For the Album view, you can choose to display your images as a thumbnail grid or as an Image Slider.

The Grid Layout

The grid can easily be customized the number of columns, column/row spacing, image limit

All of the grid’s layout and width calculations are handled via php, meaning they still function 100% if javascript is disabled.

Slider Layout

The Image Slider is also easily customized with options to set the number of images, whether to:

  • Animate the height
  • Bullet or Thumbnail Pagination
  • Fade or Slide
  • Autoplay (slideshow)
  • Crop the images

All images can be vertically cropped.

Custom Urls

Images in your Album can link to custom urls, which can be used to link to anything. You can also choose which elements are linked, such as the title or image.

Image Overlay

The overlay feature takes your image title, caption or both and is displayed when you move your mouse over the image. The image overlays can be used in both the Gride and Slider layouts.

The lightbox has all the features you’d expect and supports popular video sites, like Youtube and Vimeo. That means you can use the block to create a Video Gallery really easily.

Image Handling

One of the coolest things with the Gallery block is that all the image resizing and calculations are handled for you, so there is no need to waste time working out image dimensions. Simply select the layout you want, customize to your liking and the block will do the rest for you.

The block is fully responsive and your images will look great, regardless of the device they are being viewed on. Want to see it for yourself? Check out the Gallery block demo on Responsinator!

Touch Support

Both the Slider and Thumbnail carousel have support for touch enabled devices, letting your users navigate your album with the swipe of their finger.

That’s it for now, we’ll post some more info once we’ve rested from the big push it took to get the block out!
